Creative Questions: Meet the writer - Christine King

19 November 2020

Interview of the Month with Author Christine King

So, lets start with the easy ones...

What is your name? Christine King

What genre do you write? Horror and fantasy. I have been concentrating on the Gem Masters series at the moment.

Which author would you like to invite for dinner? That is a tough one... I guess I would have to say it would be wonderful to have Sir Terry Pratchett gracing my table, as he was so smart and funny. But can I cheat and have Stephen King peering around the door and maybe sneaking in for a piece of pie?

When did you start writing? Oh boy. When I was young. I remember being in a drama lesson and we had to pretend it was the future, then act as our older selves, explaining our jobs and stuff. Everyone else wanted to be famous actors, world renowned doctors, singers and the like. I was a writer. I didn’t even make myself a famous writer, just doing ok. I think I was realistic even as a child, but it was my dream to write books and now I do. I wonder how many of the other children followed their dreams?

What does your writing space look like? I don’t really have a space, I write in the front room with the telly on, in the bedroom at night, in the study if my hubby isn’t working from home. I move around and find a place that works.

How often do you write? Not often enough. I have found lockdown very stressful and I have got so little done. I need to find my flow again.

Do you have any advice for those starting out? Write. Keep writing. No matter the length, the genre or how good it is, just write.

What is your next project? The next Gem Master’s book comes out next year. So, I have to get on with it. I also have a rather cool new book half written. If I find my flow soon, it will get finished. I hope.

This section is a creative exercise. Book titles as questions.

let’s see what you come up with...

Would you rather be a bullfrog? (Book by Dr Seuss)

Well, Jeremiah was a bullfrog and he was a good friend of mine. I never understood a single word he said but I helped him to drink his wine. It was mighty fine.

Honestly though, I guess... No, I would not want to be a bullfrog. I would much rather be house cat. Fat and pampered, lovely.

Where’s my cow? (Book by Terry Pratchett)

Living in the country, pretty much in every field. We had a sign up the other week for a lost cow. Just like you see for lost cats or dogs. Not really sure how you lose a cow but if everyone could check their garden sheds and back gardens,

please.

What’s coming for Christmas? (Book by Kate Banks)

I really hope NOT another lockdown. I love Christmas. I need a fun filled Christmas and I need to see my family. No one knows what the future holds, but I have my fingers crossed for a safe, joyful Christmas to end this awful year.

Thank you so much. We hope you have a wonderful Christmas.
