Creative Questions: Meet the writer - L. Stephenson

17 June 2021

Interview of the Month with Author L. Stephenson

So, lets start with the easy ones...

What is your name? L. Stephenson

What genre do you write? I mainly write horror.

Which author would you like to invite for dinner? A favourite of mine, Richard Laymon.  He’s no longer with us, sadly.  With every book I have read of his, I can feel how much he loved to write.  I would be refreshing to sit with someone I admire who radiates that kind of passion for their craft.

When did you start writing? On and off when I was just in primary school, but the desire to create became more prominent during ages 11 and 12.  Before writers like Stephen King got my attention I was inspired by books from the Goosebumps and Point Horror series.

What does your writing space look like?  Wherever I am, I need a desk, a chair, my laptop and some device to play my favourite horror movies on in the background.  Usually the classic slasher icons like Freddy, Michael Myers or Jason.

How often do you write?     I wish I could say every day, but inspiration doesn’t work like that.  It can be very on again, off again, like a bad relationship.  The best writing streak I ever had was when I wrote almost every day for over a year.

Do you have any advice for those starting out? Be open to critiques that can help you improve your writing.  Start with short stories, answer open call submissions, get your work published and make goods friends with other writers.  Even if it is just a small few.  And most importantly, believe in yourself and in your work.

What is your next project? I will be working on the sequel to ‘The Goners’, which will be Part 2 in the Boatmore Butcher trilogy.

This section is a creative exercise. Book titles as questions.

let’s see what you come up with...

Your Coffin or Mine? (By Kimberly Raye)

Well, that has to be the worst pickup line I’ve ever heard!

Scared Yet? (By Jaye Ford)

If you have to ask, then you’re probably doing it wrong, luv.

Coffee Tea or Murder? (By Jessica Fletcher)

Murder, please.  2 sugars.

Thank you so much
